Future Africa Organizes STEM Career Tour at UP for Students
Future Africa’s Community Engagement in One Health, in collaboration with the National Zoological Garden’s ZooClub, has made strides in nurturing young talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). From June 30 to July 2, 2025, a unique Youth in STEM (YiSTEM) Career Exposure Tour welcomed 25 ambitious high school students. The event aimed to shed light on vibrant career opportunities in health, veterinary, and agricultural sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP).
Exploring Health Sciences
The tour kicked off at UP’s Faculty of Health Sciences, where the students received a warm welcome from the staff. Professor Flavia Senkubuge, the Dean, shared her personal journey, motivating the learners to chase their aspirations with both purpose and vision. Attendees participated in various activities, including a tour of cutting-edge training facilities and a session on basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). They also learned about the diverse careers in medicine and pharmacology, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these professions in enhancing life quality.
Veterinary Science in Focus
On the second day, students ventured to UP’s Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort, which is home to Southern Africa’s sole veterinary science campus. They explored the skills labs, anatomy rooms, and the fascinating bone museum, engaging with both academics and students. A standout moment came from Stella Machaba, a passionate fourth-year veterinary student, whose candid insights provided a relatable perspective on the dedication required in veterinary medicine. Her words encouraged learners to rethink their assumptions and discover the vital role veterinarians serve in both public and environmental health.
Innovation in Agricultural Science
The final day of the tour took the students to Innovation Africa @UP at the Hillcrest campus. Here, they delved into various facets of agricultural science, including soil health, crop management, dairy production, animal nutrition, and farm operations. This visit illustrated that agriculture transcends mere farming; it embodies the principles of science, innovation, and sustainability. Participants gained essential knowledge on the crucial relationship between food systems, human health, and environmental well-being.
