Future Africa: Welcoming the Next FAR-LeaF Cohort at Symposium
The Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LeaF) is a prominent program organized by the Future Africa platform at the University of Pretoria. Currently, it is entering an exciting second phase with the introduction of 22 postdoctoral fellows hailing from 10 different African nations.
Gathering for the first time, the new cohort, FAR-LeaF II, convened at a week-long symposium held at the Future Africa campus from August 4 to August 8, 2025. The diverse group consists of fellows from Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana, Malawi, Benin, and Zimbabwe. This geographical diversity mirrors the fellowship’s mission to cultivate a new generation of research leaders and enhance collaborative efforts across Africa.
H2: Focus on Research and Leadership Development
Supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, FAR-LeaF is designed to empower early-career African scholars with vital transdisciplinary research and leadership abilities. The program’s ultimate goal is to foster a network of scientists throughout Africa who can effectively address intricate challenges at the intersection of human well-being and environmental concerns through integrative strategies.
H3: Engaging Symposium of Knowledge Exchange
During the symposium, attendees participated in insightful lectures presented by distinguished academics. Esteemed figures such as Professor Colleen Vogel, Professor Derick de Jongh, Professor Emma Ruttkamp-Bloem, and Professor Chris Chimimba shared their expertise on topics like leadership, resilience, sustainability, and interdisciplinary research.
This week-long event afforded the fellows the invaluable chance to forge personal connections with one another and with the FAR-LeaF team. It also served as a platform for networking, idea sharing, and exploring collaborative opportunities within the continent.
H3: Mentorship and Career Growth
A key aspect of the symposium was the introduction of UP mentors—senior academics chosen by FAR-LeaF Programme Director, Professor Stephanie Burton. These mentors offer guidance, career support, and networking opportunities. For many fellows, interactions with these experienced mentors provided fresh insights into research methodologies and interdisciplinary initiatives.
Professor Burton highlighted the strength of the new cohort, calling them a “strong group of talented and intelligent researchers with well-developed leadership skills.” She emphasized that the fellowship is as much about building personal networks as it is about skill development.
As FAR-LeaF II progresses, fellows will continue their journey through a structured mix of training, mentorship, and collaborative research. Their efforts will not only push the boundaries of knowledge in their respective fields but also contribute to the larger goal of enhancing Africa’s scientific systems and research leadership for a global audience.
